How We Research
This page is the site's entire authority argument, so it is worth reading before you trust anything else here. It sets out what we do, what we do not do, the rubric we score on, and what would make us change a recommendation.

What we do
We compile published manufacturer specificationsfrom the maker’s own product pages, manuals and spec sheets. Every figure on this site links to the document it came from, so any claim we make can be checked in about a minute.
We then apply a stated, consistent rubric across a category, show the arithmetic that turns a specification into a recommendation, and cite peer-reviewed research for any physiological claim. Where the evidence is genuinely thin — which in this category is often — we say so rather than borrowing certainty.
As of this update we cover 44 products across 41 pages, of which 5 carry at least one manufacturer-cited specification.
What we do not do
- We do not test products.No lab, no owned units, no “in our testing”. Not one product on this site has been in our hands.
- We have no clinician on staff. No physical therapist, no doctor, no certified trainer. Nothing here is medically reviewed and nothing here is medical advice.
- We accept no free products and no sponsored placements. Nobody pays to appear here and no manufacturer sees a page before it publishes.
- We do not write prices by hand.Every price renders from live Amazon data, stamped with the date it was checked. If that data goes stale, the numbers disappear on their own and the buttons revert to “Check price”.
That is a real gap against the competition. The sites ranking above us for these queries genuinely have tested thirty units and genuinely do have a DPT on the masthead. We cannot imitate that honestly, and pretending would be both a deception and the easiest claim on this site for a competitor to falsify.
So we compete on a different axis: a published, reproducible method built on sources you can check yourself. That requires no credential, and it turns out to be a real gap in this market.
The rubric, with its weights
Scores out of 10 on this site are editorial judgments derived from published specifications, not measurements. They are visible on the page and they deliberately never appear in structured data — marking an editorial score up as a product review rating would contradict everything above.
For percussion devices, the weighting is:
- Depth capability — 30%. Published amplitude and stall force. A device that publishes neither cannot score above the midpoint here, regardless of brand.
- Spec transparency — 20%. How much of what matters the manufacturer actually publishes on the page you buy from. This is unusual as a scored dimension and it is deliberate.
- Usability — 20%. Weight, handle geometry, control simplicity, whether the low setting is genuinely low.
- Noise and running characteristics — 15%. Published dB where available; otherwise scored down for the absence.
- Support and durability — 15%. Warranty length, published durability claims, likelihood the brand still sells parts in three years.
For non-powered tools — rollers, balls, sticks, insoles — the weighting shifts to fitness-for-purpose, durability under load, and cost per use, because those categories have almost no meaningful spec sheet and pretending otherwise would be theater.
What the numbers actually mean for tissue
This is the part no competitor publishes, and it is the reason the rubric is shaped the way it is.
Amplitudeis how far the head travels on each stroke. It is the only spec that determines how deep a percussion device physically reaches. Superficial structures — forearm, calf belly, the top of a trapezius — sit within a few millimeters of the skin, and a 10 mm stroke is already past them. Thick muscle bellies — glutes, quads, thick paraspinal muscle — are the only place a 16 mm stroke earns its money. Over bone, no amplitude helps at all.
Stall force is how hard you can press before the motor stops. It decides whether the stroke survives contact with your body. A long stroke with a weak motor is a short stroke the moment you lean on it, which is exactly when you wanted the depth.
Speed is the number every listing leads with and the least important of the three. Higher speed with a short stroke buys a faster tickle.
Weight is the spec that decides whether a device gets used on your own upper back, and it is systematically under-rated in every roundup we have read.
How we choose what to feature
Four criteria, applied consistently:
- Currently sold and in stock. Every product is resolved through a live retailer lookup, not from a list.
- Price transparency.If a live price cannot be retrieved, the page says “Check price” rather than showing a number from anywhere else.
- Spec disclosure by the manufacturer. A brand that publishes its figures gets scored on them. A brand that does not gets scored down for that, and the page says which page we checked.
- No unsupported health claims. A product whose marketing claims it cures a condition is a reason for exclusion, not a selling point.
How we handle evidence
Any physiological claim cites a primary source — the study, not an aggregator repeating it. Any contraindication is quoted verbatim and linkedto the manufacturer’s own safety documentation, never summarized from memory, because paraphrasing a safety warning is how a warning becomes wrong.
Where the literature is weak, the page says so. Percussive therapy is a good example: the evidence supports short-term reductions in tissue stiffness and improved range of motion, and it does not support faster recovery, breaking down scar tissue, releasing fascia or flushing lactic acid. We write that on the pages that sell percussion devices, because it is true.
How we make money
Affiliate commission from Amazon. When you buy through a link here we earn a percentage at no extra cost to you. Commission never changes a ranking, which is why several pages on this site recommend the cheapest thing in the category and one recommends a free stretch over anything we sell. What would change a recommendation
- A manufacturer publishing a specification it currently does not.
- A published test protocol that would make two makers’ figures comparable.
- A product being discontinued, or its live price disappearing persistently.
- New peer-reviewed evidence that changes what a class of tool can be said to do.
- A reader showing us we got a number wrong.
