Best Tools for Knee Pain
The knee is a joint with almost no soft tissue over the front of it, which rules out every pressure and percussion tool on this site. What responds is everything attaching to it — and that is where the work goes.

Do not put a massage gun, a foam roller or a ball on your knee. Work the quadriceps above it, the hamstrings behind it and the calf below it — those are the muscles that load the joint, and they are the only things here that respond to pressure. For pain at the joint itself, TENS and heat are the tools that apply.
Why nothing goes on the knee
The front of the knee is kneecap, tendon and ligament with almost no muscle over it. The sides are ligament and joint line. The back contains major vessels and nerves passing through a small space.
There is nowhere on a knee where a percussion device or a hard ball is a sensible target. Manufacturer precautions cover bone and inflamed tissue explicitly, and the general rule across this site — stay off bone, stay off joints — has few clearer applications.
What loads a knee is everything attached to it. A tight quadriceps increases compression through the kneecap. A tight calf changes how the lower leg tracks. Tight hamstrings change how the joint moves through range. All three are soft tissue, all three respond to the tools here, and all three are a few inches from the part that hurts.
Which class of tool fits
| Tool class | Cost | Why it does or doesn’t work here | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foam roller (quads) | Cost: Budget | The quadriceps is the single biggest influence on load through the kneecap, it is a large broad muscle, and a roller covers it in three passes.Where it fails: Stop above the kneecap. Rolling onto the patella is uncomfortable and pointless. | Start here |
| Foam roller (hamstrings, calves) | Cost: Budget | Both cross the knee and both change how it moves. Broad, easy to load with body weight, easy to regulate by stacking the other leg.Where it fails: Stay away from the back of the knee itself, where vessels and nerves pass through a small space. | Start here |
| TENS unit | Cost: Budget | The one tool here that addresses the joint rather than the muscle. Pads either side of the kneecap, or above and below the joint line, so current passes through.Where it fails: Not with a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator. Not over the kneecap itself. Responses vary enormously. | Start here |
| Massage gun | Cost: Mid-range | On the quad, hamstring and calf, exactly like the roller but faster and while standing.Where it fails: Never on or around the joint itself, and never on the back of the knee. | Sometimes |
| Heat | Cost: Budget | Comfortable on a stiff knee, particularly first thing, and it asks nothing of you.Where it fails: Not on a knee that is hot, red and acutely swollen - that may be a flare or infection and wants assessment. | Sometimes |
| Massage ball on the knee | Cost: Budget | Excellent on the glute above, which influences how the whole leg tracks.Where it fails: On the knee itself, no. Concentrated pressure onto a joint with no soft tissue over it is the worst combination on this site. | Not for this |
What we would actually buy
For the muscles that matter

TriggerPoint GRID Foam Roller (13 in)
Quads, hamstrings and calves are broad muscles and this covers all three quickly. The rigid core holds shape for years.
For the joint itself

AUVON Dual Channel TENS Unit
Two channels lets you treat both knees, or a knee and the quad above it, at independent intensities. It is the only tool here aimed at the joint rather than the muscle.
For stiff mornings

GENIANI Electric Heating Pad
Passive, comfortable, moist-heat capable, and with the auto shutoff that matters if you drift off. Cheap enough not to think about.
Where to place TENS pads for a knee
Either side of the kneecap, or one above and one below the joint line, so the current passes through the painful region rather than sitting on top of it. Avoid the kneecap itself. If both knees hurt, a dual-channel unit does both at once at independent intensities.
Strong but comfortable tingle, never muscle contraction or pain, 20–30 minutes, repeatable through the day. Full detail in our TENS unit guide.
The IT band question
Pain specifically at the outside of the knee, worse when running or descending stairs, is a different problem with a different answer — see the IT band page. The short version: the productive target is usually the glute and the tensor fasciae latae above it rather than the band itself, and rolling the outside of the knee directly is both painful and not the point.
The unglamorous part
For most non-acute knee pain, the interventions with the best support are strengthening the muscles around the joint and managing load — how much, how often, on what surface, in what footwear. None of that is a purchase.
The percussion literature we cite — reduced tissue stiffness and improved range of motion — concerns muscle in healthy participants, not knee joint pain. We are not going to extrapolate it. Use the tools to make the muscles around the joint more comfortable, and get a strengthening program from someone qualified to give you one.
Common questions
Can you use a massage gun on your knee?
Not on the knee itself. The front is kneecap, tendon and ligament with almost no muscle over it; the sides are ligament and joint line; the back contains major vessels and nerves in a small space. Use it on the quadriceps above, hamstrings behind and calf below — those are the muscles loading the joint and the only things here that respond to pressure.
Where do you put TENS pads for knee pain?
Either side of the kneecap, or one above and one below the joint line, so current passes through the painful region. Avoid the kneecap itself. A dual-channel unit treats both knees at once at independent intensities. Strong but comfortable tingle, never muscle contraction, 20–30 minutes.
Does foam rolling help knee pain?
Rolling the quadriceps, hamstrings and calves can help, because all three cross or load the knee and all three are broad muscles a roller suits. Rolling the knee itself does not and should not be done. Stop above the kneecap on the quad, and stay away from the back of the knee.
When should I see someone about knee pain?
A knee that locks, catches or gives way. Significant swelling, especially within hours of an injury. A hot, red knee. Inability to bear weight. An audible pop at the moment of injury. Pain that wakes you at night. Several of those want assessment promptly rather than eventually.
